In today's Substack Live, we went on an unscripted journey through the overwhelming complexity of our modern world—from epistemic crisis to embodied consciousness, from the loneliness epidemic to the pathos of political manipulation. What began as an attempt to grapple with why we can't agree on basic reality became an exploration of what it means to be human in an age of algorithmic thinking.
We discuss how we've built powerful technologies without asking the crucial "why" questions that should guide their development. Too often, we create systems that serve efficiency over human flourishing, treating people as information-processing units rather than embodied beings who exist in relationship with each other and the world.
Beneath the chaos, we found reasons for hope. Love functions as an epistemic force—a way of knowing that reveals truths pure analysis misses. The fact that proximity to actual human suffering moves us in ways that abstract statistics cannot suggests something essential about our nature that resists dehumanization. Even our political crises reflect people searching for authentic human connection and meaning.
The path forward requires generational change—younger leaders who understand our digital epistemic conditions because they've grown up within them, who can navigate complexity without losing sight of human purpose. The choice is ultimately between accepting technological determinism that treats humans as optimization problems, or insisting that conscious beings should democratically direct their own technological future.
Our survival depends not just on managing information, but on preserving the human experience that makes information meaningful in the first place.
