The Moral Equivalence Trap

Why Biden’s Cover-up Isn’t Equivalent to Trump’s Attack on Democracy

In tonight's Substack Live, I delved deeply into the troubling psychology behind the current debate surrounding Joe Biden's cognitive decline cover-up. We explored why this revelation, while ethically troubling, is morally incomparable to the existential threat posed by the Trump administration's ongoing attack on democracy and constitutional governance.

We talked about the dangerous fallacy of moral equivalence—why being lied to about Biden's condition doesn't in any way justify or minimize Trump's blatant and destructive corruption. This conversation highlighted the disturbing inability in our public discourse to appropriately weigh the ethical gravity of vastly different offenses.

Ultimately, this is about clarity in moral judgment: Hunter Biden's questionable conduct and Joe Biden's health issues pale in comparison to Trump's systemic undermining of our democratic institutions and rule of law. One scandal is troubling, the other existential.

It's crucial now more than ever to resist the temptation of false equivalence. We must remain focused and morally serious about the fight at hand.
