I never thought cowardice was a defining characteristic of conservatism, until now. It appears that the urge to keep things the same, as long as they benefit you, which is a defining characteristic of conservatism, now enfolds amoral cowardice along with lack of empathy and blindness to changes in facts in the world. Whoever said that the young are liberal and become conservative with age, failed to appreciate that not every aging liberal decides at some point that being without values is the way to go.

Taking away a congressional seat is not taking everything. They have not ben financially ruined, which is still a possibility if they are not careful.

It is possible that he still held a deep fear of the militant republicans who Murkowsky alluded to.
Maybe he feared some made up indictment by the Justice Department or IRS audit and maybe his vote was extracted insurance.
