For Canadians, Carney's speech and moves (he is actually doing stuff, not just talking about it!) is like moving into sunshine after a long spell of shadow.
I think the horse is out of the barn. The US will not lead in the future. Us power has already largely been nullified by the reckless and incompetent administration of Trumps. loyalist cabinet who so thoroughly lack the skills and experience needed to do their jobs. When they have gifted the last of our weapons to Netanyahu. The US will be as powerless as we are alone in a world without any allies who are not in reality our cunning enemies. Unless the people do something about that soon..
Mark Carney's main gift is not speechmaking, but even so he's reasonably good at it. B+ is fine in that category.
But in the category of making concrete things happen in the real world, he's one of the best. (For one, unlike a certain someone more focused on image than reality, he knows the system inside out.) By rallying the middle power group of sane democracies with pragmatic appeals to shared interests, proposing workable alternative structures, and beginning to build them, Carney has emerged as a real global leader.
A hopeful scenario would have this sane middle power group (led by Canada, the EU, Australia, and perhaps Japan) gain critical mass working in concert, and serve to balance against an assertive China (presumably still) on the rise and a snarling United States in apparent free-fall decline.
It's probably too much to expect that this sane centrist group of former US friends, partners, and allies will succeed in checking the abuses of the American administration where our own internal checks and balances have failed, and help nudge us back to the path of pragmatic reality. But there's no harm in hoping.
Its unpredictability and now it’s unreliability (viz Gulf bases and defense agreements) created and now accelerated the massive shift Carney called out in Davos. Carney acted. Trump belittled and blustered — and now inherits the consequences he will bequeath to generations to come, in the US and all over the globe.
The level of multi-generational destruction wrought by the kakistocracy our country chose is unlikely to be repaired before the climate disaster ends us. My children aren't having children and the Christo-fascists with their 13 children pods are going to have an exciting time eating each other.
That is exactly what is going to happen. I do champion responses around the world that sadly will cripple our economy only in hopes that these actions will wake up 30 million or so Americans. To your point of how long does it take - the next three generations are going to have to live with the actions of this administration so I hope to see those first two generations show up at the polls in November. I believe the whole world is hoping the same. Otherwise there is every reason for the rest of the world to not trust America.
"At some point, the people applauding a speech about defending democratic civilization have to accept that they are the people being asked to defend it." 👊🏻
And yes please, every other world leader ask yourself "What would Carney do?" and just say no to the orange ass. Stop legitimizing him.

The US “has written way too much in pencil….”

Very nicely to the point. Stop w the concessions, already!
