We need a coalition to oppose the fascists. Some of the sharpest commentators and most articulate opponents of MAGA are former Republicans—Steve Schmidt, Adam Kinzinger, Charlie Sykes, Judge Michael Luttig, and George Conway (to whose campaign I also contributed). As Lyndon Johnson used to say, “Don’t spit in the soup; we’ve all got to eat.” We need each other.
I'm suspicious of George Conway as possible grifter and as someone who's clearly doing this for himself, not just the country. I think is only fair. But it would be an extremely stupid decision for Democrats to dismiss him based on his history as a former Republican and a Federalist Society member. I'm curious to see how he campaigns, and whether he walks the walk if he's given power. Saying all the right things as a private citizen is the easy part. Showing lobbyists the door takes true character.
Sometimes recent converts can be the best fighters for the cause 😎 I’m from Florida, if I rejected all ex republicans I would have no one to vote for 😁
Well said. “Defending the tradition requires the broadest possible coalition”, is exactly right. Not only to meet the moment, but to rebuild the country on the foundation of the constitutional order.
From the UK. Excellent article about someone who should excel at the most important and urgent task of legally skewering the Orange Syphilitic Organism
I'm glad to see this supportive piece on George, Mike. I'm not affiliated with any party anymore, and can't vote in NY, but I wish I could !! His presence in politics could be very important. I've heard him speak (not in person) very often and for many years, and trust his motives. I agree that he loves his country and wants to effect change for the better.
Everything you write about Conway could be true and yet it can still be quite reasonable to suspect that the pedigree you cite as qualifying him over and above anyone else in public life for the task of constitutional restoration is just what he brings to the table which warrants skepticism, regardless of which of the two major party banners he chooses to travel under. A white shoe corporate lawyer is not the first type of person which occurs to me as the champion of the We the People project. Like another commenter said, will he walk the walk? That’s one issue.
The other is, will he be able to walk the walk even if he wants to? While one can be thankful that someone is taking a necessary public stand against Trump, and while I do not doubt Conway’s competence and sincerity, being willing to oppose the Trump cabal is the bare minimum anyone should expect - which raises the question of why the Democratic party as an organization is not already calling in unison for impeachment, introducing the necessary legislation and voting on it, in Committee or on the floor, and seems to be leaving the demand to someone who is not yet among them to make it happen. Will the party support him if he is elected in this? If they don’t, then what good is his being there other than for rhetorical purposes (which is not nothing but it is not enough)?
I agree, I think Conway would be a great choice. Although, I’m skeptical of The Federalist Society, it doesn’t mean everyone who is member shares the MAGA view. I agree with Michael—guilt be association is childish; and picking democrats is still a risky business. look no further than Sinema and Fetterman.
That said, Jack Schlossberg will probably carry that district. I believe he will be a good second choice; plus he’s a safe choice.
That said, Jack’s Kennedy name still carries weight in the Democratic Party; even though we need serious people—these are extremely serious times and amateur hour is over!
I love George. I was very impressed with him, watching him with Sarah Longwell on The Bulwark .

I make no comment on whether Mr. Conway should be in the US House, or on how he is seeking to win a seat in that body.
I will, however, remark that the discourse, as outlined here, around the manner in which he is attempting to do so is another example of how the USAian partisan bargain is not consonant with the frame of contemporary USAian society: https://decivitate.jamesjheaney.com/p/fixing-the-senate-part-iii-your-correspondent/comment/247628217

I agree with you about George although you had a lot more info. Thanks
