Identifying as Marxist or Socialist is in the US, important because every thing you say after that redefines what that identification means. And in the US the popular definition is the product of a century of propaganda designed to distort what those words mean.
Which is why I think it's counterproductive in this country for any left-liberal to call themselves socialist even if they think they can "reclaim" the label.

Liberals named it, and continued past it. Liberals continued to do huge volumes of business with China year after year. They saw the abuses. They named it. Continued past it. Liberals did that.
Your description of Harper as not Marxist but using Marxist methodology explains to me why I still think of myself as right-libertarian when I am just as right-wing libertarian now as Harper is a Marxist.

Goldberg has really grown on me over the years, I admit. I think he's come a long way from whence he wrote that book.
