To your list of people to hate, Mike, let’s add the media producers who choose to de-prioritize or even ignore this story in favor of stories that their advertisers are more comfortable with, like yet another update on the tabloid trial of the woman who killed her children a year ago, or another clip of Trump claiming that Iran is begging for a deal, or another horse-race story about what the polls are saying.
“You will not retire into elder-statesman respectability.” I hope you’re right. Because we let the Confederates off the hook; we let Nixon and then Reagan and Bush off the hook for their violations of the Constitution, criminality, and outright lying. And all of those lapses at least partly explain why we’re here, now. So I really hope that it’s going to be different this time. I really do. But I wish I could say something stronger: that I know or expect it to be different this time. That this time there will be real accountability, real justice. Equal justice under law. Amen.

I have been calling of my congresspeople, I have been knocking doors, I have been volunteering with Moms Demand, I have been writing letters to the editor, I have been praying, I have been educating myself, I don't know what else to do. When a person loses their humanity are they still human? Honestly, are they? The people standing at the podium or behind the desk and the people behind them with their insufferable grins, their easy arrogance, agreeing to all this rot are treating other people worse than they would treat their dogs. If people wonder how the Germans could let the Nazi's do what they did, they only need to open their eyes and look around. What do we do? How do we go on when so many humans have lost the essence of what makes them human? RIP dear, beloved Pierre. We have failed you and my heart is breaking.

My heart aches for Pierre's family. As horrific as this is, it's part of our long-standing history - and we - you, me, the Democrats - have our own degree of complicity in permitting/acquiescing to today's state of affairs. It's not comfortable, but there's a kernel of truth in it. That having been said, there is a war afoot - and we must protect our loved ones as best we can and, as you have done, call out evil and demand a reckoning. A few days ago I heard about this horrific state-sponsored murder (that's what I think of it) from the guys at The Bulwark, whose first order of business is politics but who generally don't shy away from the profound moral implications of what this nation has become. That said, it's not in their wheelhouse to be as eloquently on-point as you've become in all your writing. Sometimes you just need to hear someone call evil, evil. Among the political/partisan chattering classes, even those who are staunchly pro-democracy and anti-Nazi, the hedging, the mincing of words, the sanitizing if not outright ignoring of local atrocities, and the endless front-loading of "kitchen table issues" whether in earnest or cynical ways, is too much to bear some days. Please keep bearing witness and speaking the plain truth.
