Children are a bother to such people -- they require the primary attention, not narcissistic insistence on "my interests". Parents who are insecure focus only on what they themselves need. It's a tell for "conservatives" and "Repugnicans". Children deserve our primary attention because humans evolved to require mature guidance for children's NORMAL growth and emotional maturing. They are not dogs, ready-made for obedience training. They are sentient only as we nurture them with listening and encouragement.
Thank you for saying it put loud and clearly. I have been saying for over 20 yrs that the anti-abortion contingency of the Republicans is focused only on unborn and then is non existent once the child takes a breath.
I coined this "sterile charity" where they don't have to face the suffering and death their policies cause. All is someone else's problem.
The second reason is to control reproduction and the role of women in society. Trump did not insult a boy today in the same way. It was the buddy buddy stuff. This teaches that females are fair game.
Third, the people who laugh, clapping cheer are living vicariously through trumps cruelty.
My neighbor once tried to hand me the BS about “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps”. My reply was that’s hard to do when someone is stepping on them. He didn’t have an answer for that.
“The GOP doesn’t care about our collective posterity at all.”
I am convinced that this is because the tech oligarchs behind the GOP believe that the “singularity” will occur within their lifetimes, and that they will as a result become immortal. And of course, immortality will be expensive - so much so that only a wealthy few will be able to afford it. Who, then, needs to care about the lives of the poor? They’ll die, while the rich go on forever.
This, of course, has been predicted; see the movie “In Time” among many, many others.
Mike … I wake up every morning with these thoughts. I have five children and 7 grandchildren and I have no way to counter the depression, disappointment and visceral anger and anxiety your argument describes. How to have hope?
One of your best, Mike. As a former, lifelong R until 2016, I agree with every word. It’s all deeply immoral and it was immoral long before tRuMp. He just assumed the throne at the head of a polity perfectly groomed by Falwell & Murdoch & Koch over decades.
They don’t hate children - they just see them in the same light as everyone and everything else, as grist.
The basic heuristic of this movement is the same as a zombies and just as monstrous: insatiable greed, pointless consumption and destruction without end to feed their immediate whims and appetites. The future world where today’s children will live? Ppbbbft, that’s not a thing - they must be fed RIGHT NOW.
Climate damage and pollution, sexual exploitation of anyone weaker, financial extraction and corruption, indifference to inflation - it’s all just stuffing the hopper into those same greedy mouths.
This is a lovely piece. But it's missing some acknowledgement that the Democrats are not the good guys here. They are not coming to save anyone. They are just as obsessed with serving the asset management class as the Republican Party is, only they want to hide the fact that they are doing so.
I make my harsh criticisms of the Democratic Party establishment quite frequently. I also feel I don't need to throat-clear every essay I right to the terminally anti-establishment crowd.
I recognize the former. I would not associate myself with any ‘terminally anti establishment crowd.’ I simply support economic populism regardless of party, and right now the establishment is the enemy of that.
But there's also a lot of establishment figures who are supporting the economic populists, and we'd best not turn them away if we are to have the largest coalition possible to defeat the fascist formation before us, no?
I believe that the Democratic and Republican establishment is rotten to the core, but you always welcome defectors on principle. Anybody who wants to stop shilling for the billionaires is welcome in the church of economic populism. But as an old Democratic politician once said, If a harlot reformed and showed true repentance I'd invite her into the church myself, but I wouldn't ask her to lead the choir on the first night.

Wow. A brilliant revelation of hidden truth…
Why would any parent subject their child to Trump?
He's beyond embarrassing and so is the Repubican Party...I'll never forgive them for all of this

Yes you will be accused of hyperbole. Your accuracy and clarity refute that accusation. Thx very much for this elaboration.

Thank you for your post on children. It made me feel like crying. Children deserve the best of life. I hope many people read or listen to your report.
Omg! Thank you for this Mike😢
