What you are describing is Hybrid Warfare against the American public. It is effective and this administration controls all the elements to make military occupation seem ‘normal’ and appropriate. And hooligans are easy to plant in peaceful protests - see the pardoned Jan 6 insurrectionists as a covert militia ready to be deployed as a component of future mass protests.

Ric- good points and I agree on all of them. Beware the shifting baseline. Really excellent observations.

Trystan- including as many Democrat politicians we can muster and any Republicans of conscience and political courage (it takes both qualities) if there are any left in that debased party.

The claim that "Americans now accept military deployment against civilians as normal and necessary" is a dangerous overstatement. The practice remains highly contested, and the outcome is undetermined.

You forgot the Greater Los Angeles Region which is far larger and vast than Downtown L.A. and has Double the population of NYC.

To keep restating the apparently not-so-obvious: advertising's abuse of language and the de-truthing of fascist propaganda go hand in hand with child neglect and abuse to produce our declining public mental health. Epigenetic neurobiology tells us that persistent stress depresses normal brain cell function. We are all born with the Pleistocene legacy of incredible human potential, and because we have to come down the birth canal while our heads are still developing, we have evolved culture to nourish the rest. We're screwing that up, and need to get smart -- quick. The 6th Mass Extinction is upon us, and the Fascist Slide is at our feet.

I think one likely outcome of this is that anti-regime protesters will see what is happening in Los Angeles and conclude that if there is no difference in response to a (mostly) peaceful protest and a full-blown riot, if only because the few parts of the protest that do get violent will get amplified and claimed to be typical of the entire protest, then there's really no reason not to riot.

They might also remember that the 1960s Civil Rights Movement didn't achieve what it did through peaceful protest, nor did the Indian independence movement, or really any other such movement. Their success was due to the implicit threat that if the demands of the peaceful protesters (such as Bayard Rustin and Dr. King) weren't met, then the authorities would have to deal with those espousing violence (such as Malcolm X and the Black Panthers).

But people should protest non violently and condemn those who do not! Don’t give right wing propagandists any edge at all!!

Yes, this has been something pretty noticeable to me as well. The protests seemed rather localized and aside from the rock throwing not very violent. The Waymo car fires are interesting given they are basically Googles car and Google is a military contractor. Were these unoccupied cars torched by protestors or self detonated?. How hard would it be to pay crisis actors to take credit for the torching?

More important its shows complicity of the so called liberal legacy media in the psyop to subvert Democracy and the ability to convince Americans of pretty much anything (this goes back to 9/11, COVID, etc).
