Center right pundits like Isgar are so lost in the sauce they can’t see what’s in front of them anymore. I heard Emily on breaking points today remark at the incredible theory she heard that the US right now is resembling Weimar Germany and if anyone thought it had merit. I just can’t with these people anymore

"I would counsel impeachment and removal of these justices, if I had a say in the matter."

None of us have any say in the matter any longer, at least not in the sense that you seem to be implying. Our last say was in 2024, when a slim majority of the American public chose a completely corrupt white male felon over an intelligent Black woman. The midterm election is unlikely to occur, and even if it does, with the ongoing redistricting and dismantling of the VRA, will be so corrupted that the results cannot be counted on to be fair or representative, and it cannot be assumed that the elected officials will actually take office.

I would counsel everyone to prepare to leave the United States, be ready to stand against your government, or pop some popcorn, sit back, and try to enjoy watching American civilization fall.

I am far more optimistic on this point than you, Mr. Eychaner.

Glenn Eychaner's avatar

I simply see no reason for optimism any longer. Congress will clearly constrain neither the Executive nor Judicial branches prior to the election, and I full expect that the Executive branch will attempt to control the election results by any means necessary, including deploying federal DHS agents to voting sites, seizing and discarding mail-in ballots, and demanding that his followers re-enact January 6th in any states where the election does not seem to be going his way.

The People are getting agitated.

The People are dumb, panicky animals and you know it, Agent M.

Glenn Eychaner's avatar

The people are getting agitated on both sides of the argument. There are still those who blame the Godless Democrat Socialist Communist Liberals for everything that has gone wrong in this country, and unfortunately, they will still respond when the stupid felon with the loud voice declares that the election was "obviously" fixed by them. Like I say, pop some popcorn, sit back, and try to enjoy watching American civilization fall.

One more point, neither a constitutional nor climate one — when arguing a $480 billion harm to the coal industry, was there any mention of an offsetting gain to renewables industries? Or did Roberts assume consumers would just use less electricity? But … in that case, consumers would have more money to spend on other things, which would boost other sectors of the economy.

Silly me! None of this counts for shit with the Trump Court.

the Gospel of Luke 20: 45-47

“With everybody listening, Jesus spoke to his disciples , beware of the scribes and teachers of the law, who desire to walk around in flowing robes

and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplace and places of honor at banquets. But they cheat widows and steal their houses and for a show make lengthy prayers”.

Get rid of the justices and watch Republicans put them back in mere minutes.

Do norms matter? is a that a better question?

Sarah Carpenter, who now runs defending democracy, in an interview circa 2025 with Tim Miller of Bulwark said casually when observing some legalese that when she worked for McConnell and helped hold up Garland nomination for 9 months and that it was entirely correct per process. There is nothing that says president / Congress must appoint a justice in a given time frame. Tim didn't push back or ask any follow up question. She has been back on Bulwark podcast a few times since.

When RGB died, Barrett was appointed in 3 days.

Do norms matter?

Excruciatingly astute... It also suggests a need for more attention to Roberts' use of the terms "emergency" and "irreparable harm". It seems to me that he is signalling that law is about to uproot privilege and serve "the people" -- the ultimate crime against neo-Confederate, aristocratic, racist, predatory advantage. This would also explain the lack of explanation -- there isn't one in a real democracy, the one Americans believe we're living in. Their tenuous, ambitious, scurrilous search for monarchical rights over parliament are additional testament to that. Just issue a stay and search for more legal baloney, while hoping that the privileged set will run out the clock on the people's energy. It's the bottom line for bad faith. We need to see this, get serious, get confident, get busy, believe in the righteousness of our democratic responsibility to each other. I like how JFK put it: "We do this not because it is easy, but because it is hard" -- here, the morally right thing to do: the only thing that will save the planet from Ecological Overreach and Climate Disaster. Their truly momentary privilege is literally at the end of the line, whether they win or lose. If they win, they, and we, all lose.

We get caught up in the lurid sexual "honey trap" aspects of the Epstein scandal, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. It was the influence peddling throughout government and industry that was the real story. This is a total breakdown of the separation of powers, not to mention basic morality. The entire network of corruption needs to be documented and punishments administered to those who so callously put private interests over public service. Treason is the word that comes to my mind...

This is very well presented, and IMO very accurate, but man, is it bleak. What a corrupt pile of fuckery.

If our institutions hold until 2028, it’s hard to see them holding further without a House/Senate/White House trifecta willing to get rid of the filibuster, enlarge SCOTUS, ban gerrymandering/enact proportional representation, pass a new VRA, make at least DC a state (preferably Puerto Rico, Guam, USVI, and any other possible atolls or reefs as well), and promptly prosecute all the Trump administration’s criminal activity. And even suggesting a power play of this magnitude makes me feel like an ends-justify-the-means moral equivalent of MAGA.

I fucking hate politics.

How do you cope with this shit, Mike? Serious question!

It just makes me angrier and more committed to fighting for the republic. Our glorious, precious experiment.

Whats your point? Sam Seder, Jeet Heer and others have extensively covered this, and more.
