Among other things, the Declaration was a justification for a tax revolt. And, as we all know, the early draft was about "life, liberty, and property". Liberty is one of those abstract things that allows individuals to project their own meaning onto.
Repugnicans have, for decades, defended their inclination to lie, cheat, and steal, to obstruct justice and democratic controls, backed by billionaire money for ultimately billionaire benefit. They insist that their bad faith is justified, because they should rightfully be more free than others; where government of, by, and for the People to protect public values and equal justice under the law inhibits their irresponsible "freedom"; that they are entitled by their perversions to obstruct accountability by any means necessary.
For decades. Why are we surprised? Were we not paying attention, or just sucked into believing that somewhere in all that perversion there was good faith? Really. Freedom of speech has been so badly abused that we've forgotten where it comes from and what its limits are. Repugnicans have been locking theater doors and crying "Fire" for decades. They have deliberately undermined public mental health, then stolen our access to remedies. It's time to put a stop to that.
