There is a peculiar pathology that has settled into certain corners of the right-libertarian and classically liberal commentariat, and I want to name it precisely, because imprecision here is its own form of capitulation.
"It is about what the facts obligate " - Is/ought?
I do not know those about whom you write, but fear of facing where we are, is not confined to the commentariat. I see it in all my friends. Once you look into the abyss....
I will add that I am lately screaming at the interviews that are broadcast - “Please stop! Your so precise and careful commentary is insulting and worthless!”
The idea that this might seem arguable or an unexpected departure from the norm is itself proof of the point. Opinionators should steer clear of pretending to write history.
To be fair, decades of bad faith have torpedoed the good sense of a great lot of observers -- that's the creepiness of dark Repugnican arts, the pretextual advance of the fascist agenda. Oligarchy-owned media have labored in these fields for quite a while, deliberately pushing that agenda, while normalizing the descent into the maelstrom. The American public is still trying to catch on to this bigger picture, this vile subversion of our public mental health. Time to return to those raucous days of progressive populism, when people were still citizens first and foremost, not yet capitulated to consumerism. Sorry, gang, the gloves are off, and it's time to learn how to land some punches; we must be the first to a knockout. It's late in the game, and you're reeling -- are you aware, or too stupified already?
Its like boiling a frog in cold water. Increasingly since 9/11 the temperature has been rising rapidly but the frog sits content and is not alarmed.
Substitute heat for Evil. Blowing up dozens of boats far from our shores because they might be carrying drugs to someplace else (no evidence provided or due process), ICE human rights abuses, kidnapping foreign leaders on trumped up drug charges while pardoning another convicted former foreign President, pardoning dozens of convicted felons owing over a billion dollars in restitution to victims that is negated, pirating oil tankers in international waters due to unilateral decrees that such shipments are illegal under our laws (not international law), conducting a surprise attack like Pearl Harbor or 9/11 killing a countries leadership and 175 school girls during negotiations and blockading another country and depriving its 11 million citizens of fuel and electricity among other reasons for no good reason beyond we don’t like their form of government.
Not long before the water boils. The Frog might be feeling sleepy at this point. Will it jump out of the pot before it is too late or is it already too late?
Tw possible reasons for their behavior I can see are 1) they don't really feel on their bones they are going to be targeted so it seems unreal.2) they believe America is such an exceptional country fascism could never happen here.
“People who simply could not bring themselves to say the thing plainly,” has almost caused me to lose my mind over the last decade of the rump era. The cagey language that avoids at all costs the true nature of what we all see has left me avoiding the pontificaters who spend their days turning words into cash. And that is no hyperbole.
The consequences so far, of this coup-in-progress, should be visible to all. There will be more, and worse, consequences, if we all do not name the coup, and fight it.

Ditto for Matt Taibbi.

So. Why not Quit NPR?
You are describing every “expert” analysis I heard today on NPR!!!
Maybe Quit NPR.
They / It manages to Smooth Over any Rough Edging. It Seems.

Although I can no longer imbibe freely as I did in my youth, it is difficult to imagine anyone being a sober observer of current events.

The abuse of the left respects the system. The abuse of the right tries to buy the system or even just take by armed forces..
Spot on
As for me. I’m not sure I matter.

Symmetric framework doing asymmetric work. Right on the money. Can you say "Overton Window"?
