I find myself in this position regularly but rarely know how to engage or respond … and this may be part of the reason for the silence of our national leaders …
I would LOVE to see a strategy + toolkit + playbook on how to combat this.
The fly in the ointment is that it takes two to tango. Those engaged in this conduct you point out don’t want to engage in dialogue. In fact, I’d go a step further and argue that the people who engage in this conduct are the MAGAt masses and the right wing echo chamber merely serves it, formerly almost exclusively through Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, but now the entire federal government leadership. It’s all performative all the time and it’s not evidence-based, but just “common sense” as their dear leader used to confirm to his followers that an airplane collision was the result of DEI hires. We’re post-dialogue at this point: tariffs will make us all rich so don’t worry about it.
Mike, we have a $44 billion dollar problem and I appreciate pieces like this exposing just how bad it is. It looks like you are getting ready to lay out a proposal and I am looking forward to it.
My hope is that people realize that walking away with their keyboard to another platform is simply just a response without addressing the bigger problem. As much as I appreciate Bluesky and to a much lesser extent apps on nostr I don't think those are the answers either. We must start with the individual and expand from there. We have plenty of evidence that this open newsfeed model has been catastrophic for our discourse as it was always ripe for bad actors to weaponize it.
This is a really spectacular piece. Thank you for this.
This is fantastic.
