No different than Aileen Cannon. She was chosen to do a job, and she has done it, reversals by the Eleventh Circuit be damned. She sank the case that should put Trump behind bars for life for stealing a library full of classified information. Mission accomplished.

Turns out that Cannon’s husband is a member of the Columbo crime family, “allegedly”! South Florida mob people who get the business done. Now which crime family was Les Wexner “allegedly”associated with? Wexner is the richest man in Ohio, head of a business empire, who gave Epstein his Power of Attorney in the 1980’s. Was it the Columbo family too?

Washington Post headline and subhead on the Texas gerrymander:

The Texas gerrymander freakout

What's happening in the Lone Star State is not a threat to democracy.

(August 20, 2025)

Washington Post headline and subhead on the Virginia gerrymander:

Virginia plunges America deeper into the gerrymandering abyss

The redistricting scheme was always a power grab by Democrats. Voters went along with it.

(April 22, 2026)

Also, death to gerrymanders.

The MAGA fanatics are big on death threats, aren’t they? And also threats of sexual violence in the case of any woman who tries to stand up to them. And so persistent in such threats—while never being called out for them by the better-spoken part of MAGA—that this is a bigger reason than most others know why individual Republicans seldom dare to take a more ethical and independent course. Threats of violence are a standard part of the MAGA package, and straight from the shameless Redneck culture of the Jim Crow South.

"The Republican National Committee has court-shopped this case into his courtroom three separate times, past a Virginia statute the Democratic-controlled legislature passed specifically to require cases like this to be filed in Richmond."

Venue-shopping is yet another way in which our judicial system has become a complete failure (For example, Right(-wing) (Dis)Honorable Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, but there are plenty of others.) I'm not sure how to fix this, other than to stop appointing biased political hacks as judges, and then I look at our (Burrito) Supreme Court (sponsored by Taco Bell), and realize that I just don't know how to fix the problem. Power corrupts. Maybe judges shouldn't have what amounts to lifetime appointments? (I know I've voted against a judge from time to time, but I'm not sure that all judges in all states have to face a popular vote.)

Luckily the same appeal scenario that stopped the GOP from preventing the VA voters from approving this will likely undo this. Fingers crossed.

With GOPers, it's ALWAYS "Heads, I win - tails you lose", full stop. A formula the right-wing fed. judiciary follow to a T.

Now that Chief Justice Roberts has also been revealed as having violated his oath and profited from his position with the Court, we can be assured that SCOTUS will rule in a way to best protect its most compromised members.

As usual, time & money are wasted and the lawyers win. Shakespeare had the right idea about them.

Cecelia Blair's avatar

Do you have some good quotes to share? Shakespeare was an expert at hitting the nail on the head.

Sounds like an impeachment waiting to happen, to me.

The thing all of us are crying out to know: where are the pressure points where I can do something that will matter?

“kill all the lawyers”

Mike Brock, you have written a superb piece here—both in terms of its knowledgable and skillful analysis as well as the beauty of language. If the world were better than it is, you’d have a column in the NYT, WP, LA Times, or SF Chronicle. But I am glad I have found you here!
